Prayer is life

The message has been sung time and time again. Prayer is our gateway to the heart of God. We’ve been told since our youth, and for others in recent times that prayer can change things. It’s powerful, majestic and the remedy for a lot of problems. There is a saying that seven days without prayer will make one weak, and with that let us now go into the matter of prayer. Can it truly give us a new leash on life, to whom do we pray?

But I can’t! I don’t know how to!! Ever found yourself murmuring that excuse? Consider that prayer is a conversation, the way we talk to friends, the same way we can come in a social realm to converse with God. Our God is faithful, loving and kind, and He desires to hear everyone’s prayer. Ellen G. White hits the nail on the head when she said:

“Our heavenly Father waits to bestow upon us the fullness of His blessing. It is our privilege to drink largely at the fountain of boundless love. What a wonder it is that we pray so little! God is ready and willing to hear the sincere prayer of the humblest of His children, and yet there is much manifest reluctance on our part to make known our wants to God. What can the angels of heaven think of poor helpless human beings, who are subject to temptation, when God’s heart of infinite love yearns toward them, ready to give them more than they can ask or think, and yet they pray so little and have so little faith? The angels love to bow before God; they love to be near Him. They regard communion with God as their highest joy; and yet the children of earth, who need so much the help that God only can give, seem satisfied to walk without the light of His Spirit, the companionship of His presence.”—Steps to Christ, p. 94.

That shows us that, we as a people are in desparate need of prayer and praying hearts. But we often stay away from the art of prayer. We are like plants that refuse to be watered, still expecting to grow. Now logically we know, a plant that doesn’t get watered is only going to do one thing: whiter away and die!

“The darkness of the evil one encloses those who neglect to pray. The whispered temptations of the enemy entice them to sin; and it is all because they do not make use of the privileges that God has given them in the divine appointment of prayer. Why should the sons and daughters of God be reluctant to pray, when prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven’s storehouse, where are treasured the boundless resources of Omnipotence? Without unceasing prayer and diligent watching we are in danger of growing careless and of deviating from the right path. The adversary seeks continually to obstruct the way to the mercy seat, that we may not by earnest supplication and faith obtain grace and power to resist temptation.” –-Steps to Christ, p.94

Sometimes we fail to remember, the devil is much smarter than we are. What makes us think that we can cease in prayer and still grow strong in faith?? The above quote serves to remind us, the devil thrives on the prayerless. You’ve heard the cliche “much prayer, much power!” How very true indeed. The life of a Christian is to be consumed in prayer, because only through prayer can we get God’s gift of power, love and a sound mind. Praying shows God we’re interested in Him the same way He is interested in us. There is an abundance of life to be found in prayer. Prayer heals, prayer uplifts and prayer gives us a direct link to God! Why aren’t we utilizing this facet? What even more is, this gift is free! We don’t have to pay to pray! We don’t have to sacrifice a lamb to pray, all we have to do is tune our hearts in sincerity and connect with our heavenly Father!

While it’s easy to want to give in and say you don’t know how to pray, let us be mindful, if prayer is a direct connection to God, why not use it? It doesn’t matter if your prayers are as a child, all He requires is that you seek to spend time with Him in prayer. Give of your best to the Master it says in song, we can only learn to give our best when we daily come giving our worst and praying to be made better.

“Evening and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice” (Psalm 55:17, KJV)
