Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
Paul is telling us not to be overwhelmed by evil, or not to give into our carnal desires and execute judgment as we see it fit. For if a man sins against us and we in return sin against him, aren’t we both guilty and worthy of punishment?
Consider a mud stain in your white shirt, will it be cleansed by rubbing more mud on it, or will it be cleansed by washing it with soup and water? So the same way we are to use a cleaning agent; which is contrary to mud, to clean mud, is the same way we are to use good; which is contrary to evil, to clean evil.
